If you can ignore the fact that the democratic party was the klan, I can ignore that.

You can't even let things go.

Sad....

We should look at the sincerity of those who claimed to be reformed, esp the erstwhile Democrats.

We also should recognize which party the racists have regrouped into. There's really no question that the Republican Party is the party of the risen South.

Happily they partnered with the worst capitalists and have the paid the price. The Southern strategy has failed, and while The Turner Diaries inflamed McVeigh, the country did not follow suite and there was no race war. Hopefully the progress made 50 years ago will continue.

I don't think Democrats were the same all over the country, and that's changed by the decade too.

I haven't explored this much, but it seems that different generations of Democrats adapted to immigration after Lincoln. Part of the strategy was to include the Irish, if I remember 'The Invention of the White Race' by T. Allen.

I also used to have 'How Irish Became White,' by Noel Ignatiev. Ignatiev found that in the 1850s, Irish people were considered non-white in America and were frequently referred to as “niggers turned inside out.” Blacks were sometimes called “smoked Irish.”
